Do Buffalo Bills have backup plan if they don't sign DeAndre Hopkins?

One of the biggest storylines in the NFL right now is where will DeAndre Hopkins be playing football in 2023. After being released by the Arizona Cardinals, the two popular landing spots are the Buffalo Bills and Kansas City Chiefs.

While DeAndre Hopkins would be a great fit with the Bills, and drastically improve their chances at a Super Bowl, the Bills may not have the cap space to give Hopkins the money he might be looking for in his next contract.

The Buffalo Bills front office appears to be preparing for the possibility they can't bring in DeAndre Hopkins and are creating a backup plan. According to Ryan Talbot with newyorkupstate.com, the Bills are set to bring in Preston Williams and Marcell Ateman for tryouts this week.

Buffalo Bills appear focused on adding size to the wide receiver position

One of the trends this offseason has been the Buffalo Bills adding bigger pass catchers for Josh Allen in this offense. They have already drafted Dalton Kincaid and wide receiver Justin Shorter in the 2023 NFL Draft with both players being 6'4".

That trend has continued with the recent tryouts as Preston Williams and Marcell Ateman are both 6'4" or taller and are big-body wide receivers. Ateman was a seventh round pick by the Raiders in the 2018 NFL Draft but has appeared in only one regular season game since 2019.

As for Preston Williams, he was an undrafted free agent signing by the Miami Dolphins and made a notable impact as a rookie with 32 receptions, 428 receiving yards and three touchdowns. Unfortunately, he has dealt with a number of injuries from a torn ACL as a rookie to a foot injury that ended his season in 2020.

This past season he was with the Carolina Panthers but appeared in only one game. Both players are unlikely to have anywhere close to the same impact as DeAndre Hopkins and if the Bills were to sign either player they would be a long shot to make the 53-man roster.
