Curtis Samuel's versatility gives Buffalo Bills' offense another weapon

On Thursday, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported that former Washington Commander receiver Curtis Samuel agreed to a 3-year deal, $24 million dollar deal to come to play for the Buffalo Bills. This adds to the depth in Buffalo's receiving core along with Mack Hollins who signed with the team earlier in the week. 

Samuel is a unique gadget player that the Commanders had for three seasons and the Carolina Panthers had for four seasons before that. He has elusive speed and can move around defenders laterally to find cuts upfield.

He had another good season in Washington keeping up consistency from 2022 with 613 receiving yards with 4 touchdowns on 91 targets. He averaged right around 9.9 yards per catch. He was the second-highest targeted player for the Commanders behind star wide receiver Terry McLaurin. He was also second on the team in receiving yards.

He is also a threat in the run game which Buffalo can really utilize. It did not necessarily show up on the stat sheet since Samuel had just 38 yards on the ground this season, but it is important to remember that Washington was second in the NFL in passing attempts per game and quarterback Sam Howell threw the most attempts out of any starter this past season. In short, the Commanders did not really utilize his run ability as they could have.

He did have two seasons with the Panthers when he had 100+ rushing yards and he did the same for the Commanders in 2022.

Samuel also had no fumbles this past season showing how great his ball security was. In fact, this has been a strength of his during his entire NFL career as he just has just two fumbles during both receiving and rushing plays.

Samuel is the complete package for the Bills when it comes to who they get to be a playmaker in certain schemes. He can both run the football and receive passes making him a player offensive coordinator Joe Brady and quarterback Josh Allen will love to have on the field to get any sort of yardage.
