The Buffalo Bills face off against the New Jersey Jets on Monday Night Football to begin the 2023 NFL season. It's a big game to open the season and the experts have gone back and forth, almost 50/50 on who will win. But did you know that the Bills have only lost their season opener twice since Coach McDermott took over in 2017?

With those season-opening wins, it often means the Bills typically start off the season on a high note. McDermott has been the head coach now for 20 September games since he took the head job in Buffalo. During that time, the Bills have won 13 of those games for a solid .650 winning percentage.

Getting off to a good start is important for most teams. We all know that teams that start 0 - 2 to begin the season have exponentially tougher odds of making the playoffs but this hasn't been a concern in Buffalo since McDermott became the head coach. Only four other qualifying coaches (minimum three seasons) have a better win/loss record in September. Oh, by the way, the Jets have not won a season opener under Coach Robert Saleh.

In case you're wondering about the other four coaches that ranked ahead of Coach McDermott, here is the list of the top five.

1. Sean McVay - Los Angeles Rams

.800 winning %(16 - 5)

2. Matt LeFleur - Green Bay Packers

.769 winning % (10 - 3)

3. Kevin Stefanski - Cleveland Browns

.667 winning % (6 - 3)

4. John Harbaugh - Cleveland Browns

.660 winning % (33 - 17)

5. Sean McDermott - Buffalo Bills

.650 winning % (13 - 7)

Will Coach McDermott and the Buffalo Bills add to that September win total on Monday Night? We'll have to wait and see how things play out but the Bills begin September with the Jets, followed by two more games this month, the Las Vegas Raiders (I'll be in town for this one) and Washington Commanders, with two of those on the road. If the Bills can win their Monday Night affair with the Jets, they have a very good chance of getting through September undefeated.
