Bills urged to cut ties with veteran linebacker before Week 1
By Brandon Ray
It is the last preseason game for the Buffalo Bills and we are four quarters away from getting past what feels like the longest part of the lead up to the regular season. It doesn’t matter if the Bills win or lose this game. All that matters is that they leave this game as healthy as possible. The last two weeks, the roster has taken a big hit with the injury bug.
Across the roster, various positions have been affected so much that Brandon Beane has had to sign players just to get them to the preseason. Not to mention, some players like Mitch Trubisky and Marquez Valdes-Scantling could even miss some regular season time if they aren’t fully healed.
Throughout preseason, we haven’t seen a spark from the Bills on offense. They still have yet to punch the ball into the endzone. Buffalo has scored 15 total points off of five field goals. The Bills have only had three true opportunities where they got into the redzone but failed to get six points. On the other hand, the defense played spectacularly against Pittsburgh, which was led by Buffalo native linebacker Joe Andreessen.
As Buffalo prepares to wrap up their preseason finale against the Carolina Panthers, there are many players that will be playing their final game in Orchard Park. The Bills will start to perform their roster cuts here very soon and this game against the Panthers could be the last time for many players to play in front of Bills Mafia. This is where the toughest part of the business comes into play.
Buffalo Bills urged to cut ties with linebacker Deion Jones
David Kenyon from Bleacher Report wrote a list on one player that each NFL team should cut from the roster before Week 1 of the regular approaches. When it came to the Bills, linebacker Deion Jones was the candidate.
"Because of injuries, there's a chance Deion Jones sticks in Buffalo for a bit. At this point, however, hope of Jones reclaiming his early career form is more wishful than anything. Joe Andreessen's recent emergence may have shifted Jones to the wrong side of the roster bubble."
- David Kenyon, Bleacher Report
Kenyon makes an excellent point about the injuries, but the front office isn’t going to make decisions that will just need to be reevaluated later on once starters come back. However, with Matt Milano being out of the majority of this season, it would not be shocking to see Buffalo bring on lots of linebacker depth. That gives Jones an advantage.
At the same time, Jones has been very quiet in training camp and preseason. The spotlight was on Joe Andreessen last week against the Steelers and there is an argument that he has a better chance at being higher than Jones on the depth chart. Unless Jones can shine on defense against his old team, his tenure in Buffalo will be short.
