Buffalo Bills' honorable mention

Even though Jack Kemp came in third in the voting, I had to include him. He's the only Bills quarterback to have won a league championship, winning it twice in 1964 and 1965. He almost made it three straight in 1966 but a loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFL championship game prevented the Bills from representing the AFL in the first-ever Super Bowl against the Green Bay Packers.

Kemp is fourth on the Bills’ all-time passing yards and pass attempts and fifth in touchdowns and completions.  He was voted to an incredible eight Pro Bowls (again back when it mattered) during his time with the Bills.  He was voted the UPI Player of the Year and the AP Player of the Year in 1965 and added first-team All-Pro to his resume.  He was also a second-team All-Pro in 1966.

Kemp, similar to Kelly but for different reasons, did not start his career with the Buffalo Bills.  He began his AFL career in 1957 with the Pittsburgh Steelers but played in only four games and did not start in any of them. 

He did not play at all in the next two seasons, then in 1960, he joined the Chargers for two seasons, where he was the UPI Player of the Year, runner-up in 1960, and finished third in voting for the same award in 1961.  He also earned a Pro Bowl spot and first-team All-Pro during his time with the Chargers.  He joined the Bills two games into the 1962 season.
