I said this when I wrote up an article about the offensive tackles that received NFL Combine invites and will repeat it. You can't have too many good offensive linemen. Besides, similar to what we discussed with Dion Dawkins, the Bills need to be planning ahead and that means finding a replacement for Mitch Morse sooner rather than later. A few interior linemen in this group are listed as centers, but I also believe most can play both center and guard.
Let's break down where we are with Morse as of right now. He will be in the final year of his contract in 2024 and is slated to make $8.5 million this year, according to Spotrac.com. If the Bills were to release him, post-June 1 this year, they would carry a dead cap hit of $3 million but would save nearly $8.5 million against the cap. I don't think the Bills move on from Morse this season, but he'll be 32 by the time the season kicks off and the team will need to have a plan for his replacement.
I know we have Ryan Bates on the roster, who has played well at center when he's been needed but I'm not interested in just playing well. I want an offensive line that completely dominates opponents. I want an offensive line that guys like Chris Jones can't just shove our lineman into Josh Allen as he's getting ready to fire a would-be touchdown. Give me more than what we have now. So, here are five interior offensive linemen to keep an eye on at the NFL Combine.
