It seemed like at halftime the Buffalo Bills were going to find a way to start the season with a win. The New York Jets lost their starting quarterback, Aaron Rodgers after only four plays and Zach Wilson had struggled to move the offense.
At that point, the Buffalo Bills had a 10 point lead and while it wasn't easy, the offense was having enough success against a good Jets defense. The second half was a different story as the Bills seemingly fell apart, allowing the Jets to score 13 straight points and take a 16-13 lead late.
While the Bills would tie it in the final seconds and get the ball to start overtime, it wouldn't be enough as the Jets would score a touchdown on a punt return to win 22-16. When looking back at the game, these are four Buffalo Bills that should shoulder most of the blame for the loss.
4 Buffalo Bills who lost the game in Week 1 against the New York Jets
Sam Martin
Since joining the Buffalo Bills, Sam Martin hasn't been asked to punt often but when he has, he has been a reliable punter. The Bills re-signed Martin in the offseason for this reason and is an excellent holder on field goal attempts, like the way he made a great adjustment on the game-tying field goal.
However, Martin is going to be remembered for his last play in this game which was a punt at the start of overtime. Jay Feely tweeted that Martin missed the punt and hit it on the wrong side of the field which had the coverage team out of place.
