In less than a week, our news feed is going to be going off constantly with breaking news of player signings, trades, and releases. The new year of the NFL officially kicks off on March 12th, but we have already started learning about various news already. There have been many trades agreed upon (will be official on March 12th) and a lot of cuts made across the league.
The Buffalo Bills have only had one major story regarding free agency and that was the release of their punter, Sam Martin. We can expect more news coming out of One Bills Drive next week.
After coming up short again in the AFC championship game, Brandon Beane has to find ways to improve the roster and do the best he can with limited cap space. With having Josh Allen right in the middle of his prime, the Bills are a Super Bowl contender but they haven’t managed to get over the hump. It’s time for them to take a massive swing and go and acquire a game wrecker like Myles Garrett.
Maybe even if Buffalo finds a way to bring in DK Metcalf from the Seattle Seahawks, it still elevates the Bills on the offense even though they need more help on defense. However, if you can bring in a star regardless of where they play, then it’s a successful offseason for Buffalo.
Bradley Locker from Pro Football Focus (PFF) created a list of the perfect free agent pairings for all NFL teams and while the Bills do need to bring in players via free agency and not just through a trade, Locker had a completely wrong pairing for the Bills.
WR Darius Slayton is not a great fit for Bills
According to Locker, Slayton received a receiving grade of 59.9 from PFF in 2024. If the Bills were to go out and get a receiver that would be a starter, Slayton is not the answer. With already having Keon Coleman, Curtis Samuel, and Khalil Shakir under contract for next season, Buffalo needs more of a dynamic playmaker and Slayton is not the answer.
While Shakir is a fantastic slot receiver, Buffalo needs someone who can stretch the field outside the numbers. There is hope that Coleman can do that with his big frame, but he declined in production down the stretch last season and will need to prove that he can get back to the player he was trending to be in the first half of last season.
In Slayton’s defence, playing for the Giants since 2019, for as long as Daniel Jones was there, he wasn’t in the best situation and maybe he just needs a change of scenery to really breakout. However, Buffalo has other pressing needs that they should be addressing in free agency, especially on defense.
