Week 13's Sunday action concluded with the Buffalo Bills taking on the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday Night Football. It was a cold, yet picturesque night that saw the Bills host Brock Purdy and company in a game that Buffalo came out and dominated from the beginning.
When the Bills were already up 21-10 late in the third quarter, Josh Allen had already made franchise history and the Bills offense went driving once again.
As Buffalo entered the red zone and ultimately faced a 1st-and-goal, Allen took the snap and proceeded to do something absolutely ridiculous. No, really, that was the only way to describe what unfolded.
Allen tossed a quick, somewhat off-target pass to Amari Cooper who was tackled almost immediately. But then, Cooper lateraled the ball back to Allen who swung around the left side of the wide receiver and took the ball all the way to the pylon.
The touchdown pass would end up being credited back to Allen, but the receiving touchdown, in the end, was credited to ... also Allen.
He became the fourth player in NFL history to be credited with a touchdown reception in which he also threw. And, he did it on a play that looked eerily similar to a current AFC rival of the Bills.
The Kansas City Chiefs infamously practice these types of plays every week and, on some occasions, bring these laterals out during games. After Allen scored on the rare touchdown play Sunday night, a certain someone was paying attention.
Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes reacted to Josh Allen's historical touchdown play on Sunday Night Football
Coming from someone like Mahomes, who often sees his top target Travis Kelce pull off a lateral like this one, Allen received the ultimate praise.
As much as Bills and Chiefs fans love to hate each other's team, there is definitely a mutual respect between the two quarterbacks. Mahomes had to offer his opinion on the play and couldn't help but compliment Allen's heroics.
This play, in a nutshell, epitomizes Allen's MVP campaign that is his 2024 season. If we think back to many preseason takes and offseason narratives which were built, there were many who believed this Bills team was headed for a year of mediocrity.
More Bills news:
Many believed the Bills might actually not be all that good, but Allen had other plans. If it weren't for the sure fire MVP candidate, the Bills would maybe be somewhere along the lines of a four-win team, give or take.
Yet, behind the effort of Allen, this team looks like the cream of the crop within the AFC.
And, although the Chiefs have a better overall record, it's Kansas City that's won several games by a slim margin this year. The Bills, meanwhile, are averaging the second-highest margin of victory in the league this season.
This is all thanks to none other than Josh Allen, and it's not just Bills fans that are shouting this from the rooftops. If you're an NFL fan of any kind, it's impossible not to admit Allen looks like a bonafide lock to win MVP.
Sunday night's rare air only further proved that point.
