The stinging feeling of losing is going to hurt the Buffalo Bills and their fans for sometime. Quite frankly, the Bills were not the better team against the Kansas City Chiefs and it was shocking that they only lost by three points. The Bills did manage to take different leads throughout the game, but they gave it right back to Patrick Mahomes. Instead of getting ready to head down to New Orleans, the Bills are sitting back and thinking about their heartbreaking 32-29 loss.
The Bills’ defense was decimated by the Chiefs passing game. They allowed Mahomes to pass for 245 yards and one touchdown, that of course went to Xavier Worthy who the Chiefs traded up to get from the Bills in last year’s draft. He made them pay the price on Sunday night.
Even though Buffalo allowed Kansas City to run for 135 yards, their pass defense was the biggest liability. According to Carl Jones, Mahomes went 12/15 for 169 yards and his one touchdown to Worthy. Buffalo played in man coverage on 47% of Mahomes’ dropbacks.
Bills must address secondary issues in offseason
Buffalo’s secondary has taken a little bit of a revamp compared to last season and now they are set to lose Rasul Douglas to free agency. Christian Benford has been playing lockdown and he is going to get paid soon (hopefully by the Bills). Kaiir Elam is a bust and Brandon Beane just needs to move on from him. The Chiefs were picking on him the entire game. Not to mention, the secondary depth is not the greatest at all.
Cole Bishop has only started a handful of games and Damar Hamlin is set to his free agency. Brandon Beane has to make it a priority to bring in secondary help. They need to bring in true veteran help in free agency. Maybe even make a trade as well.
The Bills are going up against teams like Dolphins, Patriots, and Chiefs who all have quarterbacks that are not afraid to sling the ball down the field. They are going to need all the secondary help that they can get.
