When NFL free agency began in early March, the Buffalo Bills had a lot of players hit the open market. Enormous chunks of their 2025 defense, as well as some top offensive performers, were unrestricted, and fully expected to be picked up by teams in need of talent.
In the months since then, it would be unfair to say that the market cooled on those former Bills - the market was never interested to begin with as it appears.
Whether you want to think that the Bills gave Sean McDermott enough talent to win the Super Bowl, one things is clear....the rest of the NFL said the talent wasn't even enough to get a roster spot early on in free agency.
Time changes no things
This outlet discussed, a few weeks into free agency, that the Bills overwhelming volume of unsigned outgoing players was an indictment of their previous talent level. A lot of people agreed that Sean McDermott had got the most out of the roster.
Even then, we didn't foresee another six weeks of absolutely zero players getting pen put to paper. One of the very few changes in nearly two more months of free agency was Damar Hamlin coming back to Buffalo again on a 1-year, $1.265m deal. Groundbreaking.
Even the key contributors of the Bills 2025 defense remain undesirable. Joey Bosa has had hardly a rumor about him. Matt Milano and Shaq Thompson were the best linebackers Buffalo had, and remain undiscussed. DaQuan Jones and Larry Ogunjobi were household names a few seasons ago, and yet no interest.
In a market that quickly dwindled, these names should be somewhat desirable in the second, post-draft wave of free agency. The fact they're still available makes for a much friendlier contract scenario, yet they're still unsigned.
Affordable, usable former Bills
But an uninterested market makes a great case for a cheap return. Though the draft is over and some holes have been filled, the roster is not perfect. Though they're done plenty to replace and improve on Joey Bosa, there are issues at linebacker; Either Matt Milano or Shaq Thompson would prove an admirable fit.
There's a space for A.J. Epenesa - Though he may not light up the stat sheet, he would fit the new defense nicely and adds good depth. Even Matt Prater could give Tyler Bass some incentive with a kicking competition.
If the Buffalo Bills intend to shore up their problems, there's an easy place to look. Though the team will have a new staff, with fresh ideas and systems to implement, familiarity that could help. There's plenty of offseason left.
