We are just two days away from seeing the Buffalo Bills taking the field for their Week 1 opener where they will look to get their first win in Houston for the first time since 2006. The Texans have been a constant problem for the Bills, especially since they have beaten them in back-to-back years the last two seasons.
This Bills team feels different. They obviously look different since they have a new head coach in Joe Brady, new coordinators, and new players on both sides of the ball. When it comes to the defense, that is the unit that fans should be excited (and nervous) to watch the most.
Jim Leonhard is taking control of the defense, which was a home run hire by the Bills this past offseason. Since then, the Bills have added a bunch of defensive talent through free agency and the NFL Draft.
New-look Bills defense set up to turn things around for the better
Going from a 4-2-5 to a 3-4 scheme is a shift that is needed for Buffalo. Things were becoming stale on the defense, so this change could finally bring the intensity that the defense hasn't had in a long time. However, the Bills already had some great playmakers already who should be able to elevate their game even more under Leonhard.
ESPN's Jeremy Fowler and Dan Graziano provided intel going into this weekend, and Fowler managed to write about Deone Walker specifically and how the Bills "have big plans" for him and that he "could become a young leader for a defensive front that needs it."

Deone Walker is a rising star who could breakout in 2026
Walker exceeded all expectations as a rookie last season for the Bills. Even though he was a 4th round pick, he played like a top rookie in the draft with his ability to provide interior pressure. He was great against the run, he had 4 pass deflections, as well as an interception in the playoffs against the Denver Broncos.
Now with him having a year under his belt, and being part of a newly revamped defense that should bring more aggression, Walker is a prime candidate to become a Pro Bowl player at the very least. I would even argue that he could become an All-Pro if he stays healthy.
Fowler providing this update should make Bills fans wonder what they have planned for Walker. If he can become a leader immediately in his second season, it will just make it even better that the Bills got him on the third day of the NFL Draft last year.
