It’s been nearly 20 years since the Buffalo Bills last won a game in Houston against the Texans, per Pro Football Reference. Every team in the NFL has some kind of mismatch in which they just simply don’t match up well against. Yes, even the elite teams still struggle against other teams.
The Bills haven’t been able to show that they can match up greatly against the Texans. Houston has had Buffalo’s number in recent memory. The last time the Bills beat the Texans overall was in 2021 in Buffalo, winning 40-0 when the Texans were among the worst teams in the NFL. Before that, the Bills had beaten the Texans in 2015 (again, in Buffalo).
History has not been kind to Bills when it comes to facing Texans
The Bills have only beaten the Texans in 5 games out of a possible 13 games. So, it's easy to say that the Bills could very well struggle once again in Houston. Infact, some might even say that the Bills don't stand a chance at all despite all of the changes that the Bills went through this offseason.
Lou Scataglia of NFL Spin Zone is predicting that the Texans are one of four teams that are "guaranteed to win in Week 1".
"The Bills also have a new head coach in Joe Brady, who is coaching in his first game at this position. Furthermore, defenses are typically ahead of offenses early in the season, as it historically takes a bit longer for offenses to find their groove. Defensive improvements aren't as tough to enact, so while Buffalo can again be great here, they'll fall into a quick 0-1 hole, as Houston's defense is a massive problem and should also need to shutdown one of James Cook or DJ Moore to find a path to victory." said Scataglia.
Bills have many doubters to prove wrong ahead of Week 1
Ever since it was discovered that the Bills would be taking on the Texans in Week 1, there have been a ton of doubts for the Bills because of what Houston has done to Buffalo in the last couple of years.
The last two seasons, the Texans' defense has made life miserable for Josh Allen. When a team can make an opposing teams' best player struggle, it's a very promising sign for them. Going into this matchup, Allen has a better supporting cast around him with DJ Moore as his new No. 1 receiver.
Not to mention, James Cook managed to rush for over 100 yards in last year's game. If the rushing attack can get going again, it should very well open up the passing game and allow Buffalo's offense to move up and down the field.
