We are slowly approaching the halfway point of the NFL season and fans are able to have an understanding of where each NFL team stands. It’s not just the teams, either. Players are shining while others are heavily struggling.
For the Buffalo Bills, a big reason why they are 5-1 is because of the best player in the league, QB Josh Allen. The 2024 MVP is off to another great start with over 1,700 total yards and 17 total touchdowns. He's got a 75.8 QBR which is amongt the best at the quarterback position. Not to mention, he's helped the Bills reach 30+ points in 4 out of their 5 wins.
Even though Buffalo's defense has been a massive liability, the greatness of Josh Allen has shadowed their mistakes. But we know that having that type of strategy is not going to do the Bills any favors.
Josh Allen continues to stand out as MVP candidate
Cameron Wolfe of ESPN and NFL Network recently wrote about how there was a poll of 16 NFL executives, coaches, and personnel people and these members voted on who the MVP of the league was up to this point in the season. There was a Top 5 list, along with some honorable mentions, but coming in at No. 2 was Josh Allen only behind QB Brock Purdy of the San Francisco 49ers.
"But this award is really about value, and it's easy to picture the Bills as a non-playoff team without Allen at the helm. His defense has performed worse than any candidate on this list -- Buffalo has given up 29-plus points in five of its six games. But the Bills are still 5-1 largely because of Allen's play on the other side of the ball." Wolfe wrote.
"The way Allen performed late in their 37-34 OT victory over the Rams is the most memorable MVP moment of any QB performance this season. Allen did it primarily with his legs, rushing for career-high 121 yards -- including 91 in the fourth quarter and overtime. Allen had a 93.3 QBR in that win. As one NFC defensive coach said, "It's gotta be Josh Allen right now. He won the game vs. the Rams by himself!! Damn he's good!!"" Wolfe added.
Both Allen and Purdy were the only QBs listed in the Top 5. RBs Kenneth Walker and Bijan Robinson were also listed, along with WR Jaxon Smith-Njigba.
Without Josh Allen, the Bills aren't even close to 5-1
I think sometimes we forget that the MVP award should be going to the player that is so valuable to their team. Without Allen, the Bills are not the championship contender that they are. He is the true definition of what it's like to be the most valuable to a team.
Sure, they have a fantastic rushing attack with James Cook but that game can only go so far. Infact, Allen is part of that attack with 240 yards and 8 touchdowns.
I'm not saying that Brock Purdy shouldn't be part of the MVP conversation, but Allen is miles more valuable to the Bills than any other player is to their respective team.
