In last year’s NFL Draft, the Buffalo Bills made not one, but two trades to move back out of the first round. The first trade (they were sitting at No. 28 overall), was with their bitter AFC rival Kansas City Chiefs. The Chiefs ended up taking wide receiver Xavier Worthy to add some speed to their offense. Buffalo went from No. 28 to No. 32. It was a highly questionable move by Beane as he basically gave away the chance to draft Worthy.
Then the Bills decided to trade out of the first round, trading the last first-round pick to the Carolina Panthers who would end up selecting South Carolina wide receiver Xavier Legette. The Bills acquired the 33rd overall pick and kicked off the second round by drafting wideout Keon Coleman.
Buffalo did acquire extra draft picks with both trades, but it was definitely out of character for Beane to make these kind of moves. The NFL Draft is two weeks away and the Bills are sitting at No. 30, on the backend of the first round again. With the Bills have ten draft picks to work with, there is a good possibility that they may trade up to acquire an impactful player without having to give up too many picks.
However, NFL Draft analyst Field Yates believes that this could be a second year in a row where we see the Bills trade back once again, and more than likely out of the first round. Yates spoke with Dan Fetes, in which Fetes asked Yates what the Bills’ “dream scenario” could be at No. 30. Yates responded that the Bills could easily be a trade-back candidate with teams who might be looking to trade back into the first round to potentially grab a quarterback late in the first.
It makes sense for Bills to trade back, at the right price
Unless there is a prospect like CB Trey Amos or DT Kenneth Grant still available by the time the Bills are on the board at No. 30, fans shouldn’t be surprised to see the Bills repeat draft history from last year and move out of the first. Right now, the Bills have two 2nd-round picks to use but no third-rounders.
This would be a perfect opportunity for Buffalo to gain even more draft capital, potentially even for next year as well. Sure, it would be tough to have to sit through the first round just to see the Bills trade away their first round pick again. However, Beane is all about building through the draft. Bills Mafia should know this.
