While the Buffalo Bills may have Greg Rousseau who currently leads the NFL with 6 sacks, the defense overall for the Bills has been going through growing pains under Jim Leonhard. It’s a new scheme and it’s still the beginning of the season.
However, we are now entering the second quarter of the season and the pressure is starting to turn up.
Bills' defense must start to figure things out before it's too late
It might be a bold statement to say this, but even though the Bills currently sit at 3-1 going into Week 5, their defense has been a liability and outside of Week 3 against the Los Angeles Chargers, this unit has hurt them more than help the team.
The secondary plays a big role, but across the entire unit, all three levels could use some improvement. One player that could potentially be moved is EDGE Khalil Mack of the Los Angeles Chargers. With the Chargers getting off to an 0-4 start, Mack is a player that people should be watching to see if he would get traded.
Chris Landers from FanSided.com recently put together trade proposals that involve Mack, and Landers listed the Bills as one of the three teams as a potential landing spot.
Landers put together a mock trade of the Bills acquiring Mack from the Chargers in exchange for a 2027 4th-round pick.
"The reality is that Buffalo simply doesn't have the horses come crunch time; outside of Rousseau, who's been a one-man wrecking crew so far this season, Bradley Chubb is the only other Bill with more than one sack so far, and he's at 1.5. Just relying on Rousseau to be great won't be enough; how many times have we seen this Bills pass rush falter late in playoff games because they don't have enough juice to threaten with four? Mack clearly has something left in the tank and would be an invaluable partner for Rousseau against Patrick Mahomes and Lamar Jackson." said Landers.
Khalil Mack would elevate Bills' defense across the unit
The Bills are generating pressure from the defensive line, but imagine a rotation that included Mack, Bradley Chubb, Greg Rousseau, Michael Hoecht, and T.J. Parker…that is beyond dangerous for any offensive line to deal with.
Mack has been one of the most dominant pass rushers that we have ever seen. He has five seasons of 10+ sacks which included getting 17 back in 2023 with the Chargers. Right now, he has 3 sacks through 4 games to go with 14 total tackles.
Adding him via trade would boost the Bills' pass rush even more, which would help with the pressure that the secondary is going up against. If the pass rush can disrupt the protection, it sets the secondary up for success and not give up the big play. Not to mention, Mack would be an excellent mentor for Parker, who is already learing from Rousseau and Chubb.
