In just over 24 hours, Week 2 will kick off between the Buffalo Bills and Detroit Lions. Both teams are coming into this highly anticipated matchup at 1-0 after close Week 1 victories, and there is a lot of reason to believe that this could be a high-scoring game between two powerful offenses.
Both Buffalo and Detroit scored 31+ points in Week 1 against their opponents, and it wouldn't be surprising to see it happen again. If that were to be the case, that would mean that both defenses would be in for a long night.
Bills and Lions' defensive units could be in big trouble in Week 2
While the Bills' offense managed to put up 36 points against the Houston Texans, their defense let C.J. Stroud and the Texans offense walk up and down on the field at times. It's a bit concerning that they allowed the Texans to score 31 points. Had it not been for Deone Walker and Greg Rousseau stepping up late in the 4th quarter, who knows if the Bills would have won that game.
As for Detroit, they were up 21-0 against the New Orleans Saints at one point and then the Saints came roaring back to force overtime. The Lions scored first in overtime, and then the Saints responded with a score of their own. Had New Orleans not missed on their 2-point conversion, they would have beaten the Lions.
Even though both Buffalo and Detroit have concerns with their defenses, the Lions were hit with some news on their offense that gives the Bills' defense a major advantage going into Thursday night.
Wednesday injury report shows major weakness Lions have that Bills can attack
The Lions will head into this game without two of their starting offensive linemen. According to the Lions’ Wednesday injury report, OG Christian Mahogany and OT Blake Miller have been ruled out with injuries which puts Buffalo’s defensive line in a great position to dominate.
Being down one starter is bad enough. Being down two, though, could be a big nightmare for the Lions' offense. If their protection for Jared Goff doesn't hold up, or if they can't open the running lanes for Jahmyr Gibbs, Buffalo's defense is going to thrive.
In addition to Mahogany and Miller being ruled out, cornerback D.J. Reed is heading into this game questionable with a foot injury. He has been limited the last two days, making him a true gametime decision. The Lions already have major problems in the secondary, and if they don't have Reed, Josh Allen might actually throw for a career-high in passing yards in this game.
