Kyle Allen continues to turn heads with another impressive preseason showing

Maybe the backup QB isn't an issue after all.

Every NFL fan knows that the Buffalo Bills have one of, if not the best quarterback in Josh Allen. The Bills may not be perfect, but there is no doubt that they have an elite quarterback who now finally has a go-to No. 1 receiver in DJ Moore. However, the backup situation behind him has featured a revolving door with many guys in his tenure.

One of those guys that is now in his second stint with the Bills is Kyle Allen, who was with the team in 2023 and is now back in Buffalo.

Allen has never been a starter for more than one season back in 2019 with the Carolina Panthers, and even then he just played in 13 games where he threw for 17 touchdowns and 16 interceptions. He’s been a journeyman throughout his career, and him signing with the Bills didn’t exactly bring the most excitement amongst fans.

However, Allen's last two performances during the Bills' preseason have been encouraging, even though it may have only been against backups.108 yards

Kyle Allen shows ability to earn trust in second preseason game

In last Saturday’s game against the Carolina Panthers, Allen went 14/16 for 108 yards. The efficiency was great to see considering the fact that Allen had not been able to show that in the past. He helped the Bills get into scoring position which helped them dominate the Panthers.

In Buffalo's second preseason game against the Browns, Allen started the game and played the entire second half before being replaced by Shane Buechele for the second half. However, Allen looked like he was in command of the offense and he helped the Bills take a 14-7 halftime lead. He finished the first half going 10/12 for 128 yards and a touchdown to Mecole Hardman Jr. that put the Bills up late in the first half.

During that drive, Allen launched a perfect 37-yard pass to Ja’Mori Maclin that helped the Bills get into scoring position that late in the quarter.

Backup QB concerns can start to come down just a bit

Again, I know it’s the preseason and the Bills have primarily been playing against backups. At the same time, seeing Kyle Allen be efficient and ultimately look like he’s in control of the offense and have the ability to make some solid plays, it feels and looks like he can step in if needed should Josh Allen ever have to come off the field.
