For the first time in his career since being drafted by the Buffalo Bills, Josh Allen is entering a season with a new head coach and an overall newer look to the team. While Allen has had different offensive coordinators, he’s never had a new head coach in his pro career.
It’s been Sean McDermott running the show, as he was the only head coach that Allen has had in his NFL career. Now, while he has a new head coach, it’s Joe Brady who has already been his offensive coordinator since the middle of the 2023 season.
In addition to getting a new head coach, the Bills also had a new coaching staff come into the building. We have seen coordinators come and go, but there has never been a time in the Allen era where the team brought in all new coordinators.
Bills entering new era is scary (but also exciting)
Change is scary, there’s no doubt about it. What is even scarier is that the Bills aren’t in a rebuild and are still championship contenders. So, moving on from the continuity that you have had can be frightening. At the same time, Brady has been in the building since 2022 so he knows what the expectations are.
As great as Sean McDermott was for the Bills, he could never get the team over the hump in the playoffs. Now granted, the Bills were constantly running into the Kansas City Chiefs who are this era’s current dynasty led by Patrick Mahomes. Then they lost to Joe Burrow in the Cincinnati Bengals as well, who have reached a Super Bowl this decade.
The final straw was losing to Bo Nix and the Denver Broncos in a playoff format that didn’t have the Chiefs, Bengals, or Ravens. At that point, a change was needed.
Changes for Bills seem to paying off so far from Josh Allen's perspective
According to Alaina Getzenberg of ESPN, Josh Allen had talked about how one of his “takeaways from the time away from Buffalo is how close the team has gotten.”
"This group from offense to defense is the tightest knit group that I've been around really since I've entered the league," Allen said. "The defense is meshing so well together. Just even when you walk in the dorm room or walk in the cafeteria, guys sitting down, talking, really getting to know each other." said Allen, per Getzenberg.
Team chemistry is always important, but the fact that the superstar quarterback is saying that this is one of the closest teams since coming into the league is amazing news to hear. With all of the changes that the organization went through from the coaching staff to the roster, it appears that the culture that the Bills have built up isn’t going anywhere.
Now that training camp is over, it’s time to head back to Orchard Park and get out of the preseason as healthy as possible, and then get ready for Week 1 to start this new journey under the new-look Bills.
