The Buffalo Bills’ season is over after a devastating 33-30 loss to the Denver Broncos. The Bills had numerous opportunities to punch their ticket to the AFC Championship, but after falling short, the team is, understandably, going through some tough emotions. Buffalo’s players aren’t even trying to hide what they’re feeling.

As the team left the field and headed to the locker room, veteran defender Joey Bosa took hold of his helmet with two hands, and slung it into a wall. Bosa didn’t even bother picking the helmet up as it rolled away, walking into the locker room instead.

Again, these emotions are understandable, and felt across the team and fan base. Buffalo had Super Bowl expectations, and also had the opportunity to inch closer to that goal during Saturday’s game. Unfortunately for the Bills, they couldn’t get the job done, and they are now wrestling with that reality.

While much of the fallout will be about the referees, and if the late-game calls, that weren’t in Buffalo’s favor, were the right calls or not, the Bills had their fair share of mistakes throughout the action that they have to own up to. One of those mistakes came from Bosa, who had a potentially-costly roughing the passer penalty in overtime. The penalty was ultimately declined, and overshadowed by an accepted defensive pass interference call, but Bosa’s clearly late hit was just another example of how the Bills didn’t play the kind of game needed to win.

From turnovers, to an early deficit, to penalties, to bad defense all throughout the game, Buffalo routinely put itself in a bad position all throughout the game, and it cost the team.

In the end, it’s another disappointing playoff loss for Buffalo — a story that is all too familiar. Throughout the postseason, many people have referred to the AFC as the Bills’ conference to loss, because of the lack of other high-profile quarterbacks. That narrative undermines the team aspect of football, but the reality is Buffalo had enough to advance past the Divisional round, and give itself a chance to win the Super Bowl. That didn’t happen, and now the team has to live with that.
