It wasn’t a surprise to see the Buffalo Bills move on from edge rusher Von Miller prior to the offseason. The pairing was a perfect match back in 2022, when Miller signed a six-year deal, but a torn ACL on Thanksgiving in 2022 basically sums up Miller’s tenure as a Bill. He was not the same player that he was before.
Releasing Miller left the Bills without a true veteran in the edge rusher room. However, they did manage to extend Greg Rousseau to a four-year deal to keep him in Buffalo for the next five seasons. However, the Bills found their replacement for Miller when they hit a major splash in free agency by signing edge rusher Joey Bosa to a one-year, $12 million deal.
Coming over from the Los Angeles Chargers, Bosa is joining a championship contender, something that he has not been apart of with LA. When he is on the field, Bosa is a proven ferocious player who is a game-wrecker. The former Defensive Rookie of the Year is someone that coaches have to gameplan for because he can handle his ground, whether it’s against one-on-one blocker, or a double team.
At the same time, we have to acknowledge a factor that went into Bosa being released by the Chargers in the first place. Quite frankly, it could be a big reason why the Bills either go all the way in 2025, or end in yet another heartbreak.
Joey Bosa's health will play a huge factor into success or heartbreak for Bills in 2025
Part of the risk that the Bills are taking on with the signing of Bosa is his ability to stay on the field. He hasn’t played a full season since 2017, and from 2022-2023 he only played in 14 total games. Luckily, last season he stepped up and played in 14 games but the production was limited.
The Bills are hoping that they can get the version of Bosa who was racking up double digit sacks in four of his first six seasons in the NFL. The last three years have not been the best production for him, but a change in scenery might just help him get back to his old form. Either way, this is a big year for Bosa on a contract year, and for the Bills who are in the Super Bowl window.
