At this point in his career, Joey Bosa is more of a notable name that NFL fans know rather than a player who is a game-wrecker like he once was early on in his career. The five-time Pro Bowler has been ferocious throughout his career, but injuries have become a big (and unfortunate) part of his career.
After spending nine seasons with the Chargers, Bosa signed a one-year deal to move across the country to Western New York to join the Buffalo Bills, who are clear-cut Super Bowl contenders. After releasing Von Miller, the Bills managed to bring in a younger veteran at a much cheaper price. The thing is, can the Bills get the best version of Bosa based on the recent injury history?
Players playing on just a one-year deal tend to outperform the contract because they know that they could set themselves up for a big payday, whether it’s from the current team or another one. The Bills don’t have to worry about any kind of long-term commitment for Bosa if it doesn’t work out. However, if it does and Bosa becomes an All-Pro, then the Bills will have to make a decision on whether or not to extend them.
Joey Bosa may have career-best year on a prove-it deal with Bills
Bill Barnell from ESPN recently listed Bosa as a player under a lot of pressure heading into the 2025 season, but brought up a good factor as to why Bosa is under pressure:
"If Bosa can stay healthy and make a significant dent on opposing quarterbacks during a deep Buffalo playoff run, he would be in position to sign one more deal with a significant multiyear guarantee. If not, he's probably going to be looking at more one-year pacts. Things aren't off to a great start, as he missed some of the offseason program after suffering a calf injury in May."Bill Barnell, ESPN
If Bosa doesn’t have a breakout season in Buffalo this season, he might be limiting his opportunity to cash in atleast one more time with the Bills or another team. He’s a young 30, but injuries have made an impact on how teams could view him moving forward if he disappoints in 2025.
Buffalo doesn’t need Bosa to play every down. They just need him to create a big pass rush on third down and in crucial moments. Let’s hope he can deliver and not have a Von Miller-like disappointment.
