It was a matter of time before Joe Brady became a head coach in the NFL, but very few people expected him to be the next head coach of the Buffalo Bills. However, once Sean McDermott was fired just two days after the Bills’ season ended, all of a sudden it became a possibility.
With the work that Brady did as the offensive coordinator, he was bound to become a head coach somewhere. At the same time, since the Bills decided to make a head coaching change, you typically don't see the coordinator being promoted to the full-time head coach. After going through interview after interview after interview, the Bills ended up selecting Brady which caught some people off guard.
After the offseason additions and subtractions, Brady will now be heading into his first training camp as a head coach. With the season vastly approaching, fans will now get to see how this transition from McDermott to Brady will be, and Lou Scataglia from NFL Spin Zone listed a question for the Bills going into training camp involving Brady.
Joe Brady must show how different Bills will be under him compared to Sean McDermott
Scataglia recently listed one question that each team faces going into training camp and for the Bills, Scataglia wrote “How much different are things with Joe Brady as the head coach?”
"Joe Brady now takes over for Sean McDermott as the Buffalo Bills head coach. After years of McDermott being on the job and helping guide the Bills to one of the top mainstays in the AFC, Brady takes over." said Scataglia.
"Buffalo has suffered years of playoff heartbreaks, so you figure that the team had to make a change. There isn't a guarantee that Brady being at the helm changes anything when the playoffs roll around, but he has been with Buffalo since the 2022 season, so he's been right in the middle of those playoff heartbreaks." Scataglia added.
For nearly a decade, the Bills saw their success turnaround for the better in terms of a winning culture and consistently making the playoffs. Even though they won five AFC East championships, they never reached the Super Bowl under McDermott which is why the change was made. It also didn’t help McDermott that the Bills were eliminated from the playoffs that didn’t have Patrick Mahomes, Lamar Jackson, or Joe Burrow in the postseason.
Now with Brady coming into the picture as the main leader, things should look somewhat similar in terms of continuity in the offense. At the same time, the defense needs to improve and the overall intensity needs to come alive. With the hiring of Jim Leonhard as the defensive coordinator, this defense has a good amount of promise.
Brady faces the most pressure out of any new head coach that was hired this past offseason. He steps into a situation that all coaches wish they could, and with him already in the building since 2022, he knows the expectations that come with this job.
