Two days after the Buffalo Bills suffered yet another heartbreaking playoff loss to the hands of Bo Nix and the Denver Broncos, the Bills sent shockwaves through the league when they fired head coach Sean McDermott. After nine seasons, making the playoffs eight times, winning the AFC East five consecutive times, and making it to the conference championship twice, McDermott’s time ran out in Orchard Park.
Long story short, despite all the success that McDermott had in Buffalo, he could never get over the hump and reach the Super Bowl. Now, that task belongs to Joe Brady who has been the team’s offensive coordinator since the middle of the 2023 season.
When the Bills let go of McDermott, that was just the first move of many changes that were coming. Bringing in a new head coach meant bringing in a new coaching staff. Then it would eventually lead to bringing in new players for the roster.
Buffalo will go into this season with new coordinators in Pete Carmichael Jr., Jim Leonhard, and Jeff Rodgers. There are also different position coaches as well.
Then you saw multiple players get released by the Bills, and then fan-favorite cornerback Taron Johnson was traded. In addition, players like Matt Milano, Tre’Davious White, and Joey Bosa’s contracts all expired and all of them still remain free agents.
The Bills brought in a lot of new defensive additions in the secondary, as well as the outside linebacker position in both free agency and the draft. In addition, they are moving their edge rushers to outside linebacker as well. And finally, Buffalo managed to bring in their new No. 1 reciever in DJ Moore via trade with the Chicago Bears.
Overall, there were a ton of changes made by the Bills. Some may have been expected, and some others unexpected. Either way, even though change can be scary, Brad Gagnon from Bleacher Report had one perfect word to describe the “pre-camp vibe” for the Bills.
Bills have chance for fresh start in 2026 after massive offseason changes
That one word from Gagnon is “renewed” and it focuses on everything new that the Bills brought in, as well as the opening of their new stadium.
"New No. 1 receiver, new defensive weapons, new home stadium. Enough said." said Gagnon.
While it’s easy to feel very nervous going into this season, this is also a chance to feel great about a fresh start. For the past nine seasons, the Bills have had a lot of success. However, it has always ended in nearly the same fashion in January. No matter what changes were made in the offseason, history just kept repeating itself.
Now, it’s time for something brand new that fans can get excited for. Will there be bad moments? Of course, that’s expected. However, there is a lot more promise that not after the offseason moves that the Bills made.
