The Buffalo Bills saw one of their division rivals in the New York Jets come to terms with their running Breece Hall on a new three-year deal worth up to $45.75 million, per Jordan Schultz. The Jets used the franchise tag on Hall earlier this offseason and many didn’t know if the two would come to a long-term deal. Hall will now stay in the AFC East for the foreseeable future and the Jets don’t have to worry about the running back position moving forward.
Like the Jets this offseason, the Bills were in a tough situation with running back James Cook who was looking for an extension as he was entering a contract year with Buffalo. Luckily, Cook and the Bills managed to work out a deal before the start of the 2025 season. Cook got a four-year deal worth $48 million, giving him an annual salary of $12 million per year.
After it was announced that Hall and the Jets agreed to an extension, Connor Hughes reported that Hall’s deal “is really a two-year, fully-guarenteed $29 mil deal ($14.5 APY).” Hughes did also mention that there are no guarantees in the third year.
Even though it’s a bit of a potentially shorter deal than Cook’s, the extension given to Hall all of a sudden makes the Bills’ deal with Cook look like a bargain.
Bills fans must be happy about James Cook's deal after Breece Hall's extension with Jets
The Jets are giving Hall more money per year than the Bills are with Cook, but Hall just rushed for his first 1,000+ yard season and has no more than 5 touchdowns on the ground in every season he has played in. Not to mention, he has also fumbled seven times the last two seasons.
As for Cook, he has rushed for three consecutive seasons of 1,000+ yards and led the league in rushing yards with 1,621 yards. Over the past two seasons, he has 28 touchdowns on the ground alone. He’s got more rushing touchdowns in the last two seasons than Hall has in his entire career.
People thought that Cook’s deal was an overpay, but he followed it up with major production once again and now with Hall’s deal, it shows that the Bills have the way better running back at a much better price.
