Greg Rousseau keeps applying financial pressure for massive payday by Bills
By Brandon Ray
One of the major issues that the Buffalo Bills have faced in the last couple of years have been their payroll. NFL players want to get paid their worth and sometimes teams just don’t have the money to pay every single player. Negotiations get tougher over time and sometimes that’s when a player either gets overpaid or they end up hitting the free agent market.
Ever since Brandon Beane took over as the general manager for the Buffalo Bills, he has tried to build this team up through the draft and he has done a pretty good job at it. Sure, he has had his misses, but who doesn’t? In addition, it is very rare to see Beane make a splash in free agency or through a trade to improve the team. If you think about it, there have only been three players that were acquired outside of the draft that Beane has taken the lead on; Von Miller, Stefon Diggs, and the recently acquired Amari Cooper.
Other than those three specific players, Beane likes to attack the draft and let the coaching staff develop them. One of those players that has slowly blossomed for the Bills is edge rusher Greg Rousseau.
While Rousseau hasn’t become an All-Pro type of player yet, he has grown in production each season. The Bills opted to pick up his fifth-year option of his rookie contract, meaning that the Bills have him for this season as well as next season. However, if Rousseau keeps improving as this season goes on, he may be looking for even more money than what he might be thinking right now.
According to Next Gen Stats, Rousseau is tied for the second most quick pressure rates in less than 2.5 seconds through seven games.
Greg Rousseau is making his case to get a big payday from Buffalo Bills
Seeing Rousseau on this list with pass rushers like Myles Garrett and Nick Bosa is very impressive. While Rousseau may not be highly productive this year (only having 3.5 sacks), seeing him creating pressure to help collapse the pocket is more than fine. The pressure causes quarterbacks to either fall apart or have to break out of the pocket which allows others to get to him.
Beane needs to seriously make sure that should he sign Rousseau to an extension, it is the right time. The last thing that the Bills need is another overpaid edge rusher.
