There is no denying that the Buffalo Bills have the best roster in the AFC East, and it’s been that way for some time. Not only do they have the NFL’s MVP at quarterback, but they are loaded with talent on both the offensive and defensive lines. They’ve got depth at all of the right places and a great combination of veterans and young players competing for snaps on what should be a championship-caliber team.
But the one position where they don’t stack up as well is at receiver. The Dolphins have one of the league’s top duos with Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle, and the Patriots added Stefon Diggs and Kyle Williams in one offseason. And on Monday, the Bills fans were reminded just how far behind they are at that position.
Bills still need to address the WR spot sooner than later
Garrett Wilson, the No. 1 receiver for the New York Jets, signed a four-year extension worth $130 million with $90 million guaranteed. That news was first reported by Adam Schefter of ESPN, and Wilson is now among the highest-paid receivers in the NFL. Wilson has surpassed 1,000 receiving yards in each of his first three seasons in the NFL despite less-than-stellar quarterback play.
Wilson has played some of his best games in his career against the Bills, totaling 386 yards and three touchdowns in six matchups. He caught eight passes for 107 yards and a touchdown during their first meeting last year, as Buffalo had no answer for the Ohio State receiver.
Wilson is a phenomenal player and deserves every penny he receives on his next contract. Wilson is a true No. 1 receiver, but until the Jets solve their quarterback issues, his impact will be limited in New York. Still, Buffalo could greatly benefit from having a player like Wilson on the roster, and they are hopeful that either Khalil Shakir or Keon Coleman can eventually fill that role.
But if that doesn’t happen during the 2025 season, you can bet that Brandon Beane and the rest of the front office will continue to hunt for receiver help. Having a go-to No. 1 option in the passing game can take some of the stress off the quarterback, which should be one of the top priorities for the Bills moving forward.
Buffalo is hoping they can find their version of Garrett Wilson and will turn over every stone until they do. But those types of receivers are hard to find as they are usually top-15 picks in the NFL Draft. The contract extension for Wilson is just another reminder of how far away the Bills are from finding a dominant No. 1 receiver for their passing attack.
