After the past two seasons of seeing his production fall slowly with the Chicago Bears, DJ Moore was given a big time gift by being traded to the Buffalo Bills.
In Moore’s first season with the Bears, he was catching passes from Justin Fields and he ended the 2023 season with 1,364 yards and 8 touchdowns (both are career-highs). Then once 2024 came around, the Bears had opted to trade Fields and draft Caleb Williams No. 1 overall. Williams had growing pains as a rookie (which included a head coaching change during the season), but Moore still managed to put up 966 yards and 6 touchdowns.
However, the Bears had also drafted a rookie wide receiver in Rome Odunze who has since become a bit of a go-to target for Williams. Then once Ben Johnson took over as the head coach last offseason, the Bears added more playmakers like Colston Loveland and Luther Burden III. This seemed like Moore was on his way out sooner than later.
Now, Moore lands in Buffalo as the new No. 1 receiver for Josh Allen, while also reuniting with Joe Brady from their Carolina days. It's an absolute perfect fit for everyone involved.
DJ Moore is a great fit for Bills (for more than just being a No. 1 receiver)
Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated recently wrote about each team going into the season and discussed some takeaways about where each team stands going into the season.
Breer mentioned one thing about Moore that revolves around what he can do for the rest of the supporting cast around Allen, rather than just Allen himself:
"I’d also say there hasn’t been nearly enough discussion on what D.J. Moore can do not just for Allen, but in opening things up for guys like fellow receiver Khalil Shakir, tight end Dalton Kincaid and running back James Cook in the passing game." said Breer.
Bills fans are obviously excited for the connection between Allen and Moore, but because Moore is expected to be the go-to target, that could open up opportunities for guys like Khalil Shakir and Dalton Kincaid in the passing game. For the past two years, the Bills haven't had the No. 1 receiver presence so there was no one to focus in on.
Now with Moore, defenses are going to have to respect what Moore can do for the offense. So, that means that someone like Shakir and Kincaid could be going against true one-on-one coverage that they could easily win.
This is the kind of setup that can't be found on the stat sheet, but Moore could easily help the Bills offense in more than just being the No. 1 guy for Allen, which should excite Bills fans.
