All that the Buffalo Bills heard for the last two seasons was how their wide receiver room was among the worst in the league. To some points, it was true because the receivers outside of Khalil Shakir had disappointed for various reasons. Having a quarterback like Josh Allen and not having a true No. 1 receiver hurt the offense.
When the Bills traded Stefon Diggs to the Houston Texans in 2024, Buffalo was in a search for a true No. 1 receiver. This past offseason, the Bills took a big swing by trading for DJ Moore from the Chicago Bears. With Moore being part of a crowded offense in Chicago where other playmakers were outshining him, moving on was the best thing for both of them.
The trade to Buffalo was great for Moore, as he not only gets to catch passes from Josh Allen, but he also reunites with Joe Brady from their days in Carolina, where Moore had three consecutive 1,000+ yard seasons and two of them being with Brady as the offensive coordinator.
While the initial news of the trade for Moore was exciting for Bills Mafia, the compensation that Buffalo gave to Chicago was not. The Bills gave the Bears a 2026 2nd-round pick for Moore and a 2026 5th-round pick. People thought that the Bills completely overpaid for Moore, but it won’t matter if CBS Sports’ Josh Edwards’ prediction comes true about Moore.
DJ Moore has huge chance to silence doubters about trade compensation
Edwards listed Moore as one of the few players heading into the 2026 season who are “set to experience a resurgence in 2026”.
"Buffalo likely overpaid for the wide receiver via trade, but that is further justification to the team's plans for utilizing him. Moore is closer to the end of his career than the beginning, but there is a lot of unrealized production as Josh Allen's primary target." said Edwards.
While people think that paying a second round pick for Moore was an overpay, let’s not forget that the Bills ended up making two selections in the second round of the draft after doing some trades. So, what the Bills gave up can’t exactly be called an overpay since they still selected in the second round.
Second, it doesn’t matter what the compensation is if the player that is traded delivers immediately. When the Bills traded for Stefon Diggs back in 2020, they traded a haul which included a first round pick to the Minnesota Vikings. How did it work out? Well, Diggs and Josh Allen became one of, if not the best QB/WR duo for nearly three consecutive seasons.
With Moore getting a fresh start in a new offense with the best quarterback in the league, as well as reuniting with one of his play callers from Carolina, he has the chance to show the entire NFL that the Bills didn’t overpay at all for his services.
