The 2025 season has been a bit of an unusual one for the Buffalo Bills. First and foremost, if the season ended today, this team would not win the AFC East and would be in the playoffs as a Wild Card team. That means they'd have to win three road games in the playoffs in order to reach the Super Bowl, something that hasn't been done since the Buccaneers did it in the 2020 season (and before that, it was the 2010 season with the Packers).
It's not going to be an easy task by any means but there is one big thing going in Josh Allen and the Bills' favor. That would be the lack of proven quarterbacks currently in the AFC playoff picture. In fact, this is exactly what Dan Patrick said on his show on Monday morning.
"If you're Josh Allen and you start to look around at all the other quarterbacks who won't be making the playoffs, this is your year. This is your moment. This is your time," Patrick said. Later, when talking to Chris Simms, he added, "If I'm Josh Allen, I've got no excuses now. I should be getting to the Super Bowl."
Lack of star QBs in AFC playoff picture gives Josh Allen a major advantage
It feels so simple, doesn't it? Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs' playoff chances are on life support. Joe Burrow and the Bengals have to win out and hope for some help in order to win their division and get in. Lamar Jackson and the Ravens could still win the division and make the playoffs, but they don't feel threatening. It's finally gotta be Allen's time then, right?
Well, the frustrating part here for Buffalo is that the Bills aren't even leading their division, meaning, in all likelihood, they won't be hosting a single playoff game. If the season ended today, the Bills would be traveling to Pittsburgh for the Wild Card round, then would head to either Denver, New England, or Jacksonville for the divisional round, and one of those cities for the championship game.
Winning three straight road games in the playoffs is an incredibly difficult task to pull off, but it is possible. If any quarterback could do it, it'd be the Winter Soldier himself. That being said, this team's previous postseason failures have rarely been Allen's fault. The defense has let him down more often than not, and this year's defense doesn't exactly look threatening.
That being said, Allen is clearly the best quarterback in the AFC playoff picture by a mile. If he plays to the level that we're used to seeing from him in the playoffs, that should hopefully be enough to get this team to somewhere it hasn't been in quite some time. Fingers crossed that this is finally Josh Allen and the Bills' year.
