One of the worst kept secrets going into this offseason is that the Buffalo Bills need to land a true and impactful wide receiver. Some people may say to go out and trade for a proven veteran, while some may say to go and draft someone in the first round.
In 2020, the Bills traded for Stefon Diggs that ultimately helped the Bills take the next step within their franchise. After they traded him away in the 2024 offseason, the Bills have tried various ways to try and keep the receiving game as the same, but they have failed. They drafted Keon Coleman (which clearly hasn’t worked out yet). They have traded for Amari Cooper. Then they went out and signed guys like Elijah Moore, Joshua Palmer, and Brandin Cooks.
Long story short, the Bills need to upgrade their wide receiver room and it’s without question. The biggest question is how they will do it. Even with Joe Brady leading the way as the new head coach, the Bills still need to give him and this offense a new dynamic if they want to be serious contenders for the Super Bowl.
Now granted, the Bills may have financial restrictions so trading for a veteran right now may not be the move. If that’s the case, they could very well use their first round pick on a wideout coming out of college. It has to be for the right one though, especially if they are thinking about trading up for one.
NFL mock draft has Bills trading with Cowboys to land new rookie WR (but the wrong one)
Chad Reuter from NFL.com put together a recent mock draft that has the Bills trading up from No. 26 to No. 20 with the Dallas Cowboys (originally was from the Green Bay Packers) to land Washington wide receiver Denzel Boston. In this mock trade, the Bills send No. 26, as well as a 3rd and 4th round pick to get No. 20 and a 6th round pick.
One pick right after in this mock, Texas A&M wideout KC Concepcion was drafted by Pittsburgh and that is the wideout that if Buffalo was going to trade up for, it should be for Concepcion.Â
Boston is a great prospect who should have a solid career in the NFL, depending on who the quarterback is to start. However, the Bills have already tried the route of going with a prospect who can fight for contested catches in Keon Coleman, and that hasn’t worked out. In addition, there’s no need to recreate the Coleman pick with Boston.
As for Concepcion, he is excellent after the catch and he can provide great separation which is something that the Bills’ current wide receiver room doesn’t do well. The best part is that Concepcion doesn’t need to line up in the slot. You have Khalil Shakir stay in that spot, and have Concepcion line up on the outside and all of a sudden, Buffalo’s defense becomes more open and not predictable.
Buffalo doesn’t need to get another big receiver who can go for the contested catches. They need someone who can provide speed after the catch. If they are looking to upgrade their wide receiver room in the draft, then Concepcion is the perfect prospect.
