The Buffalo Bills addressed their punter situation in the 2026 NFL Draft by selecting the University of Florida's Tommy Doman Jr. in the seventh round. They currently have 34-year-old punter Mitch Wishnowsky, who they signed to a one-year contract of $1.475 million on the roster, giving the team some competition at the position.
Having the rookie go up against the veteran punter in training camp will be a battle to watch out for out of the many positional battles the Bills will have this season.
Bills have underrated competition between Mitch Wishnowsky and Tommy Doman Jr.
Doman Jr. already enters his rookie season with better production than he had in his last year of college, demonstrating an early showing that could impress his coaches. Now he will get the chance to work with Jeff Rodgers and prove that he is Buffalo's future at punter which is such an important position that doesn't get talked about enough.
Doman Jr. had a good 2025 campaign with Florida, even as the team struggled to a 4-8 record and head coach Billy Napier was fired just before the season-ending game. In the rivalry game vs Florida State, he had a 71-yard punt that put the Seminoles' offense way back and gave the melancholy Gators' fans something to cheer about heading into 2026.
Given that Wishnowsky is only back on a one-year deal, it makes sense to go with the steady, long-term option in Doman Jr., provided he can put in the work during the offseason to make the initial training camp roster, where the official competition is then sink-or-swim. Brandon Beane believes two punters add great competition for training camp.
Punting at Highmark Stadium
While punting at the new stadium will certainly be different this season, punters will now have the advantage as the new stadium is constructed differently as compared to the original one. In contrast, they would have had to punt in the big time winds if they were still playing at the old stadium. This will certainly help during those November and December games, when it's cold and snowy and outside the stadium, windy. But in the new stadium, you won't hear a gust, enabling a more solid environment.
While Doman should be the hands-on favorite to win the punter competition job in my opinion, he has to remember that nothing will be handed to him, especially if he wants to be the starting punter on Joe Brady's Bills team, where special teams coach Jeff Rodgers holds his unit accountable and has the final say.
