Football fans know that there are three phases to the game; offense, defense, and special teams. While offense and defense get most of the glory, we know that a special teams performance can make or break a team and be the difference maker between celebrating and going through heartbreak.
The Buffalo Bills had to pick a time when to draft a punter, considering that Mitch Wishnowsky is back in Buffalo for just a year. Last season, Buffalo went through punter injuries until Wishnowsky showed up, and he was solid for the Bills. However, the Bills saw an opportunity to bring in the future as they drafted punter Tommy Doman Jr. out of the University of Florida at pick No. 239.
Buffalo would then finish out their draft class by selecting offensive lineman Ar’maj Reed-Adams out of Texas A&M at pick No. 241.
The Bills were destined to bring in a punter and Doman is a solid choice. He played three years at Michigan before transferring to Florida last season and he had a career average of 43.6 yards per punt.
Bills selection of Tommy Doman brings immediate punter competition
Doman is now set up to become Buffalo’s next punter for the future, but he will obviously go up against Wishnowsky in training camp and he will need to earn the starting job. When the Bills brought back Wishnowsky in free agency to only a one-year deal, it gave speculation that the Bills were going to be drafting a punter.
Doman will now work closely with special teams coordinator Jeff Rodgers, who arrived from Arizona after being added to Joe Brady’s new coaching staff.
Every couple of years, the Bills create some competition that seems so simple on the surface level, but it actually means a lot to fans. Again, it’s the small things that matter the most. Buffalo’s offense is not perfect and there are going to be times when they can’t move the ball.
When that does happen, the Bills need a reliable punter who can pin an opponent deep into their territory. With the drafting of Doman, Buffalo is hoping that he will be that guy who can be a difference maker for the better.
