Buffalo Bills special team players set for key training camp battle

The Buffalo Bills have training camp battles for position all across the roster, and special teams is no different. Which of these punters takes home the starting job?

For every training camp battle between two quarterbacks, fighting for the fate of their franchise, there's a matchup like this one. The Buffalo Bills' punter situation is finally looking comfortable for the first time in many years.

Last season gave the Bills some solid leg to work with, but the 2026 NFL Draft offers even more. Who takes home the arguably uninteresting, yet genuinely impactful camp battle between these two punters between Tommy Doman Jr. and Mitch Wishnowsky?

Overview of punter showdown in Bills training camp

The battle comes down to one of two men. Many spots on this roster feature wider competition, and the Bills could add at punter, but not without removing one of their current candidates. No one in their right mind would ever roster three punters at the same time, not even in June.

The first of two is the punter fans are already familiar with. When the Bills brought in Mitch Wishnowsky in 2025, he was just another leg in the never-ending search for a decent starter. The team was desperate, and Wishnowsky got his start in Week 5. He didn't look back.

Wishnowsky stepped up, and the Bills finished the season with some incredible punts, even in the playoffs. Sadly, though he's proven to be the best Buffalo's had in a while, he's not a guaranteed solution.

The Bills' punter issue stems from a lack of longevity as much as a lack of talent. On the rare occasion they've found good quality legs, the quality hasn't lasted. In drafting the competition for this training camp, they hope to finally put it to rest.

The Bills drafted Tommy Doman Jr. in the seventh round, and have eyes on him as the punter of the future. The rookie enters training camp with the added benefit of a nice, long, cheap contract. In concert with the sunk cost fallacy of the draft pick Buffalo spent on him, that gives Doman the inside track for the job.

It is a competition, however, or Wishnowsky would have already been shown the door. Training camp roster spots are valuable. The team wouldn't retain a second punter without a reason. This camp battle is very much still a race.

If Mitch Wishnowsky is able to lock down the holding job, and also accept a face-value contract, then he could be the answer in September. Tommy Doman Jr. has plenty of work to do too. The rookie has to make a huge jump from college to the pros, and it's not as simple as it seems. Can he handle the pressure, and does his leg deliver what the Bills need?
