The Buffalo Bills are extremely lucky to have one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL with Josh Allen under center. He is a true generational player that is playing some of the best football we have seen in history. Not just franchise history, but the NFL as a whole.
Allen is well on his way to becoming the best player in franchise history, but that title belongs to edge rusher Bruce Smith, who has a great case to be named the best edge rusher of all time. The two-time Defensive Player of the Year played in 19 seasons, (15 in Buffalo, 4 in Washington).
In 19 seasons, Smith had just 6 seasons where he didn’t record double digit sacks, averaging about 12 sacks per season which is simply unbelievable when you think about it. He was the player that you had to game plan for, and keep an eye out for from start to finish throughout the game.
Bruce Smith's career was legendary (but it ended without one important feature)
Smith is in the Hall of Fame, holds the record for the most career sacks, and finished his career as an eight time First-Team All-Pro. There's no question that he is one of the best players of all time. However, his career ended without a Super Bowl ring.
ESPN's Katherine Terrell placed Smith on a short list of the Top 10 players in NFL history who never won a Super Bowl, and Smith was the only Bill placed on it. Even though the Bills have had players like Jim Kelly, Thurman Thomas, and Andre Reed, Smith was by far the better player of all the four, which makes it more painful that he was never able to win a Super Bowl.
"If Brady's 89,214 career passing yards is the new modern standard that quarterbacks dream of reaching, then Smith's 200 sacks is its defensive counterpart. Smith was compiling double-digit sack seasons long after many of his counterparts had retired. He had his 200th and final sack at age 40, one of only three players in league history to record a sack at that age." said Terrell.
Bills fans can only feel pain seeing Bruce Smith on exclusive Super Bowl list
When a team has one of the best players of all time in league history and they don’t win a ring at some point in their career, there is always that disappointing feeling that comes up. Smith was part of those Bills teams that were the best in the league, but they couldn’t close it out in the four consecutive Super Bowls that they went to.
With today's Bills, having Josh Allen in his prime and being so dominant, the last thing the Bills want to see is another dominant franchise player not win a Super Bowl in their legendary careers. What's even scarier right now is that Allen has yet to even get to the Super Bowl. Atleast Smith was able to have that experience, but it always resulted in heartbreak.
