Bold Tyler Bass take makes more sense than Bills fans may think after 4 games

He's been great, but nothing spectacular.

There is a feeling of uncertainty about the Buffalo Bills after Week 4. Even though the Bills are sitting at 3-1 and still being at the top of the AFC East, their 29-26 loss against the New England Patriots has left a sour taste amongst Bills Mafia.

Luckily, it's a new week and the Bills will set their sights towards the Los Angeles Rams. Buffalo's offense has been in a funk the last two games, and the defense has been a bit of a liability in three out of their four games. Hopefully things start to come together sooner than later because now, the pressure is on them.

While they do have their weaknesses to correct, one area that has been thriving is special teams in the kicking game with Tyler Bass.

Tyler Bass is off to great start for Bills (but can he keep it up?)

Believe it or not, Bass is tied for first among all kickers in field goal percentage, going 6-6, with most of his kicks coming between 30-39 yards. He has also gone 13/14 in extra point attempts, missing one in Week 2 against the Detroit Lions.

While Bass has off to a hot start through 4 games, Adam Fromal of FanSided.com made a statement about Bass that is spot on. Fromal stated "The Bills need to test Tyler Bass before it really matters".

"The veteran kicker missed the entire 2025 campaign with hip and groin issues, and he hasn't had a chance to show he's fully himself again. His lone blemish in 2026 comes from a PAT he pulled outside left, but his longest field-goal attempt is a meager, low-leverage 46-yarder that broke a 0-0 tie in the first quarter against Houston. The entirety of his field-goal resume this season involves kicks from 27, 28, 33, 34, 38 and 46." said Fromal.

Bills have to get Tyler Bass' confidence up as season goes on

It's one thing to have early success. However, it's another thing to keep that success up later on in the season and into the playoffs.

Throughout his postseason career, Bass has gone 18/23 in field goals. In the 2023 postseason, Bass had his worst performance where he went 2/5 where he missed two kicks in the wild card round against the Steelers, and then missed the game-tying kick against the Chiefs in the divisional round that ultimately sent the Bills home.

Despite him missing all of last season, the Bills showed full confidence in Bass to be the team's kicker moving forward. They never brought in any serious competition, and they put all the trust in him.

While he has been solid so far, him only having one kick in the 40-49 yard range is not convincing that if the Bills need him to make a big time kick, that there would be total confidence. Throughout his career going back to the 2024 season, Bass' longest kick hasn't been less than 54 yards (which included a 61-yard field goal in 2024 against the Miami Dolphins).

Obviously, Bass can't control the offense's progression of where they get stalled on third down, and whether or not Joe Brady wants the offense to stay on the field to convert on fourth down. It wouldn't be a bad idea to give Bass the chance to get into that 50-59 yard range, or atleast more tries in the 40-49 range.

It's just a matter of time before the Bills find themselves in a position where they need to rely on Bass to make a play to help the Bills either take a late lead or even win the game.
