The Buffalo Bills may have a 3-1 record, and still be on top of the AFC East despite their loss to the New England Patriots. However, now that we are four games into the season, it’s time to say what many people may not want about Buffalo.
Is Buffalo actually one of the top teams? Their record says they are, but when you look their opponents from the last four games, and how they performed against Buffalo compared to other games, it says more about the Bills (and not in the best way).
Bills' 3-1 start is not as impressive as people may think it is
Heading into this season, the Bills were tasked to take on the Houston Texans, who had the best defense going into Week 1 on paper. Some people may have even been saying that if C.J. Stroud could be just above average, Houston would be a true threat in the AFC. The fact that the Bills put up 36 points on the Texans' defense was absolutely amazing.
It didn't exactly help that Buffalo's defense let Stroud and the Houston offense put up 31 points, but they made the important plays when needed.
However, the Texans are one of the few remaining winless teams and their defense is allowing 27 points per game through four games. It looks like Houston's defense may not be elite after all.
In Week 2, just four days after their win against the Detroit Lions, the Bills put up 41 points to win 41-31. Impressive, right? Not necessarily, The Bills were up 27-7 at one point in the second quarter, but then in the second half, the Bills took their foot off the gas petal a bit and gave Detroit a little bit of hope. The Lions outscored the Bills 21-14 in the second half, which put a bit more doubt in Buffalo's defense under Jim Leonhard.
Then in Week 3, the Bills completely struggled against the Los Angeles Chargers. Buffalo turned the ball over five times, and had it not been for the defense stepping up in a major way, the Bills could have easily suffered their first loss against a Chargers team that had lost to the Cardinals in Raiders in the first two weeks.
Buffalo didn't take the lead against LA until the 4th quarter, which was extremely concerning.
Finally, we get to Week 4 where the Bills host the 1-2 New England Patriots and Buffalo had the chance to take a commanding lead in the AFC East. Instead, the Bills allowed Drake Maye and his offense to gain over 400 total yards, while Josh Allen and his offense looked lost.
First 4 games for Bills tells fans a painful (but true) story
The combined record between all four of the Bills' first opponents is 4-12, and two of the three wins were one-score games. Then the Patriots walked in Orchard Park (averaging just 12 points per game in three weeks), and put up 29 points including the game-winner.
Again, the Bills are still considered a championship contender because Josh Allen is under center. At the same time, when you break it all down, the first four games shows the painful truth about the Bills based on how they performed, and how those opponent's seasons have been going so far.
The Bills are looking to bounce back in Week 5 against the Los Angeles Rams in primetime, and this is the perfect opportunity to turn things around and make a statement against another top team in the league.
