Bills urged to take aggressive approach to fix Xavier Worthy mistake

There have been a lot of questionable NFL Draft decisions made in history. Whether it’s a team picking a player higher than they should have (Daniel Jones to the Giants at No. 6 in 2019), as well as trades where teams move up and reach for a player (Mitchell Trubisky to the Bears at No. 2 in 2017). It is fun and entertaining, unless you are a fan of the team that made the mistake.

A year ago, the Buffalo Bills joined the list of questionable moves that have been made. When a team trades back, it usually isn’t a surprise because that means they are getting additional draft compensation. Smart, right? Well, it doesn’t exactly look that way when the team you trade with is the one that has constantly knocked you out of the playoffs.

The Bills had the 28th pick last year and traded back four spots to #32 with the Kansas City Chiefs, who jumped up to No. 28 to select Texas wide receiver Xavier Worthy who had just broken the 40-yard dash record (now stands at 4.21s).

In two games against the Bills last year (including the AFC championship game), Worthy recorded 146 receiving yards and 2 touchdowns off of 10 receptions. He showed off his speed and it hurt the Bills in the title game, especially when they lost Christian Benford to a concussion early on in the game.

Bills urged to correct draft mistake from a year ago

Cody Benjamin from CBS Sports is suggesting that unlike the 2024 NFL Draft, the Bills should be a team that looks to trade up from No. 30.

"A year after trading out of a pick that could've gone toward Xavier Worthy, Buffalo could look to go the other direction to add to Josh Allen's weaponry. The Bills have 10 total selections, including two second-rounders."

Again, it’s not the fact that the Bills lost out on Worthy. It’s about them giving the Chiefs the chance to get Worthy, especially considering the fact that the Bills had a need for wide receiver help. They later drafted Keon Coleman out of Florida State to start out Round 2, but the Bills took a lot of heat for giving Worthy to the Chiefs.

With holding the No. 30 overall pick in next week’s draft, the Bills could easily trade out once again to acquire more draft capital. However, they already have ten picks to use. This is the year for them to trade up if they wanted to because of how much capital they have. At the same time, don’t be surprised either when they stay put and take the best player available.
