Throughout Sunday’s Bills vs. Texans game gave Buffalo Bills fans a preview of what is to come with Joe Brady in charge. A lot of people had thought that this would have been one of those low-scoring close games, like we have seen Buffalo and Houston do in recent years.
That wasn't the case this time around as both offenses completely went off for 30+ points. While both defenses paid the price in some ways throughout the game, Buffalo came up with the bigger play with the game on the line to close the door and leave Houston with a win.
Bills' offense surprised many fans in huge Week 1 win
In 2024 and 2025, the Bills' offense had struggled to get anything going against Houston's defense. In the 2024 matchup, Josh Allen went 9/30 for 131 yards. Keon Coleman was the team's leading receiver with 49 yards off of 1 catch, despite having 5 targets. The Texans ended up winning that game 23-20.
Then in last year's matchup (again in Houston), the Texans hit Allen 12 times and sacked him 8 times. Houston barely won, but they dominated the game from start to finish to carry on the Bills' nightmare in Houston winning 23-19.
Going into this past Sunday's game, a lot of people thought it would be an easy Texans win because of their defense and all of the changes that the Bills went through this offseason. However, Buffalo shocked the Texans and the NFL by making Houston's defense look lost and unable to stop them.
The Bills won 36-31 in a game where Josh Allen had over 350 total yards and 4 total touchdowns. He was a star and he proved once again that without him, the Bills don't go far. At the same time, one of the reasons why we saw Allen and the offensive thrive is because of Joe Brady's presence as the head coach.
Joe Brady gave Bills fan big time preview of what offense will look like moving forward
From 2017-2025, the Bills were led by Sean McDermott who was a defensive-minded coach. Part of his philosophy was about making sure that the defense didn't give up the big plays through the air. However, Buffalo's defense was still a liability in the playoffs as they let them down plenty of times.
Now with Brady running the show, the Bills have more of an offensive approach and it showed in Week 1. Bills' left tackle Dion Dawkins spoke on WGR550 and talked about the difference between McDermott and Brady as the head coach, per Sal Capaccio.
"[Sean] McDermott is out guy, but McDermott was a defensive-driven coach. Joe Brady is an offensive-driving coach. And you can drastically feel it." said Dawkins, per Capaccio.

A change was needed for the Bills. While McDermott was great and he helped change the Bills for the better, the organization needed to make a change because there was constant heartbreak after heartbreak, and it kept happening because of the side of the ball that McDermott specialized in.
In just one game, against a team that had Buffalo’s number and an elite defense, Brady helped put together a great offensive gameplan that let Josh Allen do Josh Allen things. Now, Buffalo is off to a 1-0 start going into Thursday night against the Detroit Lions.
