The month of August is an exciting and stressful time for NFL teams, players, coaches, and fans because that’s when everything starts to come together ahead of the regular season. With the preseason officially over and the regular season beginning on September 9th, teams have to have their final 53-man roster submitted by 6PM on Sunday evening.
The Buffalo Bills have already made some roster moves on Saturday afternoon with releasing 13 players, and they also struck a deal with the Indianapolis Colts to send backup center Sedrick Van Pran-Granger to the Colts.
The front office and coaching staff will be working along to get the rest of the roster solidified, and moves have already been made across the league. The Bills have made another move after the Pran-Granger trade that involves one of their more underrated free agency additions that ended up being a failure.
Bills set to release S Geno Stone after disappointing preseason
According to Jordan Schultz, the Bills will be releasing safety Geno Stone, who the team signed to a one-year deal back in March. Stone was drafted to the Baltimore Ravens in 2020, played there from 2021-2023, and then signed with the Cincinnati Bengals from 2024-2025.

In the last three seasons, Stone has come away with 13 interceptions (which included in 2023 in his final season with the Ravens). His ability to play great coverage has helped him become one of the more intriguing players in the league, but he is a bit of a liability against the run.
Stone came to Buffalo as part of a revamped safety unit that included him, C.J. Gardner-Johnson, and Jalon Kilgore. The Bills also brought back Damar Hamlin while already having Cole Bishop. Fans have been expecting Bishop and Gardner-Johnson to be the team's starting safeties, which meant that Stone and Hamlin (both who are on one-year deals) would compete for a roster spot.

While Hamlin came away with interceptions in back-to-back games against the Browns and Steelers, Stone failed to make any kind of impact to make himself stand out. It’s too bad that it’s come to this decision, but Hamlin was the better option on the field.
Schultz did say that a return to the practice squad is possible, but I would be extremely surprised if that were to happen. It’s more likely that Stone will land somewhere else for 2026.
