Every single offseason, the NFL world will see major changes happen between the time the Super Bowl ends and the start of the new league year. The Buffalo Bills made one of the biggest trades this offseason so far when they acquired D.J. Moore from the Chicago Bears, giving Josh Allen a true No. 1 receiver.
The Bills needed to upgrade the wide receiver room, and getting Moore does that. However, they still have major work to do to fill out the rest of the room.
Even though the Bills made an early offseason trade, there still times when players get moved even after free agency kicks off. There is usually a trend where once the NFL Draft is completed, teams will then have a better understanding of what they still need to do to improve the roster.
With everything that has happened throughout the NFL, there could be a world where we see more players get traded going into the summer and training camp, and it could potentially include players that maybe some fans aren't expecting.
Bills see division rival listed as potential trade partner for struggling NFC North QB
Gary Davenport from Bleacher Report put a list together of players “who could actually be traded” and one of those players was Minnesota Vikings quarterback J.J. McCarthy, who will most likely be a backup to Kyler Murray, who the Vikings brought in this offseason. The two teams that Davenport listed as potential trade partners were the Arizona Cardinals and the New York Jets.
"This is a trade that likely would not materialize until later in the summer, once the Vikings have a fuller evaluation of their quarterback room and acknowledge that, despite his flaws, Murray is currently the more proven NFL option than McCarthy. The point is coming where Minnesota will have two choices: hand McCarthy a clipboard or trade the third-year pro while he still has some value." said Davenport.
After missing his entire rookie season due to a knee injury, McCarthy played in his first season last year and it was an absolute mess. He went through a ton of injuries, playing in just ten games.
McCarthy completed just 57% of his passes for 1,632 yards, 11 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. It was an extremely underwhelming season for McCarthy and with the Vikings signing Murray, it puts the Vikings in a tough spot. At this point, no one would be surprised if Minnesota were to move on from McCarthy.
With the Jets being a potential trade partner, on paper, it make sense considering that the Jets need a quarterback of the future themselves. At the same time, if McCarthy can’t show any major promise with Kevin O’Connell as his coach, then who knows if he would be able to show it for a franchise that has historically been bad at quarterback.
