The Buffalo Bills head into the 2026 season looking to have more promise than they have recently had in the last few years. Even with all of the changes that they went through from coaching changes to changes within the roster, you could definitely make the argument that Buffalo doesn’t have a gigantic weakness in an important area of the roster.
Now, you could absolutely say that they need to add to their inside linebacker group. However, let’s see how training camp plays out because there might be some surprises. Overall, Buffalo doesn't have a starting position that truly stands out as a make-or-break factor going into this season. One of their division rivals in the New England Patriots, though, could still use a major upgrade with their pass-rush.
The Patriots’ pass-rush was inconsistent last season, generating just 35 sacks which was only better than 7 other teams which included teams like the Cardinals, Jets, and Panthers. This offseason, New England saw K’Lavon Chaisson walk in free agency to the Washington Commanders, and their most notable addition was Dre’Mont Jones.
While New England is hoping that newly signed rookie Gabe Jacus can be a difference-maker, the Patriots are still going to have some growing pains at that position. Kristopher Knox from Bleacher Report may have just given the Patriots a clear path to fix their pass-rush, which should make Bills fans nervous.
Bills better hope Patriots don't add major upgrade to their pass-rush
Knox listed ideal landing spots for specific players that “need a change of scenery” for various reasons, and one of those players was DE/OLB Josh Sweat of the Arizona Cardinals, and the Patriots were listed as an ideal landing spot for him.
"While Arizona may not be publicly angling to move the 29-year-old, that doesn't mean it won't accept a strong offer. Sweat should hope it will since the Cardinals are more likely to contend for the top pick in the 2027 draft than a playoff spot." said Knox.
"Sweat should hope that he can parlay the most prolific season of his career into an opportunity with a contender in need of pass-rush help." Knox added.
Since 2021, Sweat hasn’t had less than 7.5 sacks from when he was with the Philadelphia Eagles and he is coming off a 12-sack season in his first year with the Cardinals. As we all know, the Cardinals are much closer to securing the No. 1 overall pick than they are making the playoffs.
Sweat won a Super Bowl with the Eagles in 2024, so for him to be on a team that is nowhere near to a Super Bowl contender, he could very well be an ideal trade target for top teams.
If New England was able to pull off a trade for him, it would upgrade the defense that has already given Josh Allen problems. Bills fans must hope that Arizona either doesn’t trade Sweat at all, or trades him somewhere else other than New England.
