When you take a look at the landscape of the NFL going into this season, you can tell which teams are serious contenders for the Super Bowl, and which ones will be on watch for the No. 1 overall pick in the 2027 NFL Draft. Everyone knows that the Buffalo Bills, despite their offseason changes that they went through, are true contenders in the AFC.
They have been since Josh Allen's third season when he helped take the Bills to the AFC Championship game in 2020-2021. From 2020-2024, the Bills were AFC East champions and the only team that gave them serious problems at one point during that stretch were the Miami Dolphins in the 2023 season. Eventually, the New England Patriots overtook the division last season.
When it came to Buffalo's five-year run as the division champs, the Dolphins almost took it away in 2023 but with them collapsing at the end of the regular season, and the Bills going on a five game winning streak which included a Week 18 win over the Dolphins, Buffalo stole the division back and clinched the No. 2 seed.
Now, both Buffalo and Miami are in different directions as far as where they are at with their organization. While both teams made head coaching changes, the Bills are in much better shape with their win-now mentality. As for the Dolphins, they bought into a full rebuild with a brand new regime.
Miami’s roster looks a lot more different than it did a year ago. They released (and traded) some of their notable players and they truly look like a team that is going to contend for the No. 1 pick in 2027. However, one free agency move that they made that didn’t make a ton of sense was signing QB Malik Willis to a three-year, $67.5 million deal.
Willis has the talent, but has never been a full-season starter, and outside of De’Von Achane, Willis has almost no true talent around him. With next year's quarterback class set to potentially be a solid one, the Dolphins could be in a great position to secure a top pick to select a franchise quarterback. However, a recent trade proposal by Justin Carter from FanSided.com has the Dolphins looking to make things work now rather than later.

Carter put together a trade proposal that has the Dolphins trading a 2027 5th-round pick for Shedeur Sanders from the Cleveland Browns.
"I'm a huge Willis fan. I think he's going to prove he deserves a long-term deal as Miami's starting quarterback. But considering how important the position is and that the current No. 2 is Quinn Ewers, I think an upgrade there is warranted, and while Sanders struggled a lot of the time as a rookie, he has more upside than Ewers in the event that Willis proves to be a bust and the Dolphins need to quickly pivot and see if anyone on their roster can be the quarterback of the future." said Carter.
"Yes, there are larger concerns in Miami. There's no wide receivers. The front seven could use a ton of help, as could the defensive backfield. Trading for Sanders shouldn't be a priority, but it's also not the worst idea in the world." Carter added.
Sanders is heading into his second season with the Browns, but he did show some signs of promise last season with the Browns. If the Dolphins were to trade for Sanders, they would face a potential QB battle that no one expected to take place in south beach.
If a trade like this were to happen at all, there is a world where a scenario could come up that involves Sanders taking over the offense and giving some hope for Miami. At the same time, it would also cost the Dolphins a legit chance at the No. 1 overall pick in 2027.
Seeing the Dolphins potentially try out different quarterbacks to try and win now, and cost themselves a top pick in the future would be something that Bills fans would be laughing outloud to. I know that this is just a proposal and Sanders should very well stay in Cleveland, but Bills fans have seen the Dolphins make all kinds of mistakes that have set them back before.
