When an NFL organization makes a big change, there tends to be other little changes that follow it. Typically, those changes involve moving on from a general manager, head coach, or quarterback. The Buffalo Bills were one of ten teams who were part of the head coach hiring cycle as they fired Sean McDermott just two days after their playoff exit loss to the Denver Broncos.

Brandon Beane was then tasked to find the team’s next head coach, and he decided to make an in-house promotion with Joe Brady who had been the team’s offensive coordinator since the middle of the 2023 season.

When Brady was hired, it caused a lot of mixed emotions but in the end, he is the one in charge. He followed up his introductory press conference with putting together a solid coaching staff that included Pete Carmichael Jr. as the OC, Jim Leonhard as the DC, and Jeff Rodgers as the STC.

One other key coaching hire that Brady had to make involved the offensive line, as he was tasked to hire an offensive line coach since Aaron Kromer had retired one day before McDermott was fired. Brady ended up hiring Pat Meyer, who was actually in Buffalo during the Rex Ryan era as an assistant.

Now, after spending time with the Carolina Panthers and Pittsburgh Steelers, Meyer is back in Buffalo under Brady. The hiring of Meyer was an important one because the Bills have had one of the best offensive lines in recent memory. In order to keep the protection for Josh Allen, Brady had to find a quality coach who can keep this unit at an elite level.

Bills hiring Pat Meyer gets recognized credit that has gone unnoticed

In a recent article from ESPN’s NFL Nation that includes the beat writers for each AFC East team, each analyst was asked various questions about each team including the most underrated move. Alaina Getzenberg gave credit to the Bills hiring Meyer.

"Hiring Pat Meyer as offensive line coach. Brady had a major gap to fill on his staff after former offensive line coach Aaron Kromer retired in January. Any coach brought in would be working with a veteran offensive line that has spent significant time together. Hiring Meyer gives the team consistency. Meyer worked under Kromer twice, and players have already noted the similarities between the two." said Getzenberg, ESPN.

The hiring of Meyer helps keep continuity in the trenches since this unit has been together for a while now. In addition, Meyer was with the Panthers during the same time that Joe Brady was the offensive coordinator there.

Meyer steps into this role and will be asked to help keep the continuity as great as possible in order to help the offense stay on top. With the additions that the Bills made this offseason on that side of the ball, Meyer’s contribution will be very important in order for Buffalo to have success.
