It’s very hard to look back in history and see what first-time rookie head coach has ever faced more pressure immediately than Joe Brady for the Buffalo Bills. Since 2017, the Bills have been a consistent playoff team under Sean McDermott and they have become championship contenders.
However, after countless heartbreaks and failure to fix some major flaws, the Bills moved on from McDermott and now have Brady leading the show.
Usually when there is a head coaching change, it is typically because a team underperformed greatly and the front office decides that it’s time to make a change. The thing about the Bills is that while they technically did take a step back from losing the AFC East to the New England Patriots, they were still a playoff team. Not to mention, they took the No. 1 seeded Broncos to overtime in the Divisional Round of the playoffs last season.
Brady now inherits a team that he knows and has been around, but now he is the one that all eyes will be focused on. As he steps into this new role, fans will be looking to evaluate whether or not the Bills made the right choice to move on from McDermott to Brady. However, Brady faces a ton of pressure going into his first season being a head coach in the NFL.
Bills' best-case scenario shows massive pressure Joe Brady faces in 2026
Lou Scataglia from NFL Spin Zone listed each AFC team’s best-case scenario for the 2026 season, and winning the Super Bowl was listed for the Bills which puts pressure on Brady to deliver that kind of success as a rookie head coach.
"Buffalo could finally get over the hump in 2026, perhaps. We have seen years of playoff heartbreaks, but perhaps the answer was Sean McDermott being replaced at head coach? Joe Brady is now in as the head coach and has been with the franchise, so this small, but also large change could push the team over the hump." said Scataglia.
It’s such a weird situation that the Bills are in with Brady. On one hand, you have a first-time head coach who has had success with an offense, but will now have to lead the entire team. Then on the other hand, you have a win-now team with one of the best quarterbacks to ever play the game and he has yet to reach the Super Bowl in his career.
There will be people that say Brady can’t be expected to win a Super Bowl in his first year being a head coach, but the Bills also can’t afford to waste another year of Josh Allen’s prime. The 2026 season is going to be a thrilling ride for Bills fans, and the obvious goal is to see the Lombardi trophy come to Western New York. However, it won’t be easy at all.
