When the Buffalo Bills take the field today against the Houston Texans, one key aspect that fans will be looking for is how the new-look defense under Jim Leonhard will perform. The offense for Buffalo returns a lot of continuity, with an upgrade in the wide receiver room with DJ Moore. However, the defense has a good amount of additions.
Leonhard is implementing a 3-4 defense that is needed in order to get a spark out of this unit. Buffalo's defense has been a problem in crucial moments the last couple of years, and now this new defense will get the chance to show what they are about against C.J. Stroud in today's matchup.
Bills defense set to show their new look against C.J. Stroud
In last year's matchup between Buffalo and Houston, the Bills had a completely different defense and Stroud didn't play. Now, both are completely different. While Buffalo's defense faces some pressure to step up, you could makr the argument that Stroud faces a massive amount of pressure after what happened in the playoffs last season against the Patriots.
Stroud had one of the best rookie seasons by a quarterback, but then he has been consistently inconsistent for Houston. Now with him and Houston now waiting to work on a long-term deal, per Adam Schefter and Ian Rapoport, Stroud will look to show the Texans that he can be their franchise guy.
Justin Carter of FanSided.com seems to be a big believer in Stroud for Week 1, as Carter is projecting Stroud to "step up against this Bills secondary" and show that he is for real and show that "2026 is his year" with a strong performance against the Bills.
"Is Stroud a bad quarterback? Is he a good one? The jury's still out both directions, and opening the season against a Buffalo Bills team that allowed the NFL's fewest passing yards last season is a tough way to begin things if he's hoping to change the narrative on his play. However, I think Stroud is ready to step up against this Bills secondary." said Carter.
"People around the Texans have been effusive in praising how Stroud looked in camp — and, more importantly, how much he seems to have grown mentally this offseason. If he's actually a good quarterback, he almost has to show it on Sunday to make up for last season's playoff stinker." Carter added.
Week 1 prediction puts Bills in great position to play spoiler
Even though the Bills have a new scheme under Jim Leonhard, Stroud faces a mountain of pressure right away because of what he has been like the last two seasons. Stroud hasn’t shown that major spark that he showed in his rookie season, and now he will go up against a defense that is not what he has gone up against when he has played Buffalo.
With Buffalo’s new approach on defense, Stroud faces uncertainty going into today’s game, which puts the Bills in a great spot to ruin this prediction and hopefully leave Houston with a 1-0 record.
