With training camp set to kick off here in a couple of weeks, the Buffalo Bills will be looking and evaluating the roster to see who will be on the 53-man roster. While training camp won’t be the defining factor for players, it certainly plays a big role. Joe Brady and Brandon Beane will have to decide who will be on the team during the 2026 season.
At the same time, they will also have to be deciding on what positions they will need to closely watch going into next offseason and figure out where they may need to add value. The Bills have some quality players heading into a contract year, like O’Cyrus Torrence, and they will need to make decisions on what they will do with contract-year players.
They also have some positions taken care of beyond 2026 so you would think that the Buffalo would focus on positions that aren’t set beyond this upcoming season. However, a recent 2027 NFL mock draft by Sayre Bedinger of NFL Spin Zone has the Bills making a safe pick in the first round, once again.
Bills go with defense in Round 1 of 2027 NFL mock draft (but they shouldn't)
In Bedinger’s mock draft, the Bills selected edge rusher Damon Wilson II, who has played football at Georgia, Missouri, and will now be a member of the Miami Hurricanes in 2026.
"One of the most interesting transfer prospects in the country this year is going to be Damon Wilson Jr., who is taking the 9 sacks he racked up last year at Missouri and bringing them over to Miami. With those Miami pass rushers getting tutoring and coaching from Jason Taylor, it feels like the sky is the limit for them." said Bedinger.
"Wilson is going to be the next in line for that pass rush unit with the Hurricanes, and he has some top-tier talent inside to give him favorable matchups." Bedinger added.
Wilson is coming off a 9-sack season with the Tigers, but only had 3.5 at Georgia from 2023-2024. Now with him going down to Miami, he will be looking to build off of his success from last season.
If the Bills were to go with defense in the first round once again, especially at edge rusher, fans should be very upset it seems like that the Bills are constantly adding young edge rushers early on in the first round, despite them having clear weaknesses elsewhere.
Going into next offseason, the Bills are going to have to bring in some offensive line help (if they don’t re-sign Torrence and/or figure out the left guard spot), they will also need to add help at safety if Jalon Kilgore doesn’t show promise in his rookie season. Heck, they may even need to add some wide receiver help depending on what happens with Keon Coleman.
Going with an edge rusher in the first round is a safe pick, and quite frankly, it just sounds like a Brandon Beane pick. There are other positions that the Bills have to take care of, and edge rusher shouldn’t be one of them next offseason.
