Bills must win first Super Bowl in 2025 before potentially losing coaching continuity

Any coach that has the chance to work with Josh Allen and the offense for the Buffalo Bills has a great chance at setting themselves up for a promotion in the coaching ranks. It’s happened once with Brian Daboll, who coached Allen as his offensive coordinator from 2018-2021 and he played a big role in Allen becoming one of the top quarterbacks.

Due to Allen becoming a phenomenal quarterback, Daboll received a lot of credit for it and it helped him become the head coach of the New York Giants in 2022. It also helped that former Bills’ assistant general manager Joe Schoen was hired as the Giants next general manager.

Once Daboll left in 2022, the Bills promoted their quarterbacks coach Ken Dorsey to offensive coordinator to keep the continuity for the offense. With him being promoted, the Bills would then bring in Joe Brady as their next quarterbacks coach.

Buffalo’s offense went through a bit of a rough time with Dorsey calling the plays. They were predictable at times and the talent wasn’t being utilized correctly. Halfway through the 2023 season, the struggles continued and the Bills made the move to fire Dorsey and promote Brady as the interim offensive coordinator

It was one of the best decisions the Bills made in recent memory as Brady developed an “everybody eats” offense and helped the offense average over 30 points per game despite losing a good amount of wide receiver talent. Due to the fact that the Bills offense changed for the better under Brady, he became a head coaching candidate in both 2024 and early in 2025 while the Bills were still in the playoffs.

At one point last season, Brady was becoming a serious head coach consideration for the New Orleans Saints but he opted to withdraw from that process and return to Buffalo for atleast one more season.

Losing coaching continuity could hurt Bills after 2025 season

Moe Moton from Bleacher Report listed the eight coordinators who have a good chance at getting head coaching jobs in 2026 and at the top of Moton’s list was Brady. Here’s a bit on what Moton said about Brady becoming a potential head coach in 2026:

"More importantly for Brady's resume, he elevated Josh Allen, helping the star quarterback earn his first MVP award. Allen didn't post career passing or rushing numbers, but he led the league with a career-high 77.3 QBR, putting together far more efficient performances than in recent seasons.
If the Bills finally beat the Kansas City Chiefs in the playoffs or Allen continues to play at his best within the structure of Buffalo's offense, Brady will be the top head coaching candidate next offseason."

Unless Brady has an absolute fall-off in 2025, he is destined to become a head coach. Coaching continuity is very important and gets overlooked a lot. Teams that change offensive coordinators tend to take a bit of a step back, and we saw that happen when the Bills went from Daboll to Dorsey. Luckily, they made up for it with Brady.

However, if Brady does end up leaving, it could hurt the Bills’ offense even with having Allen in it playing at a high level. That’s why the 2025 season could be the last major chance for the Bills to win their first Super Bowl because once key contributors start leaving, it becomes even harder to win.
