Before I write anything more, I promise this does not involve anything with the MVP, Josh Allen. There’s no quarterback competition for him and quite frankly, he’s proven to be the best quarterback, if not overall player in the entire league.
One thing though about the Bills is that they haven’t a lot of stability at the QB2 spot behind Allen. The good news for the Bills is that Allen hasn’t missed a game since his rookie season even though we know he can play a little recklessly. However, we know that anything can happen and with the Bills being a Super Bowl contender once again, the organization has to make sure that their backup plan is solidified as best as possible.
With Allen as the starter, the Bills have had a revolving door of backup QBs behind Allen like Matt Barkley, Kyle Allen, Case Keenum, and Mitch Trubisky.
Trubisky has been Allen’s backup for two seasons (2021, 2024). He was with the Bills back in 2021 after his tenure in Chicago came to an end. Then he joined the Pittsburgh Steelers to hopefully become the long-term answer but it didn’t work out at all which led him back to Buffalo.
The former No. 2 overall pick hasn’t lived up to expectations of his draft status and now he could be finding himself in the midst of a backup competition that maybe fans didn’t see coming.
Bills' QB2 competition is real heading into 2025 season
Along with having Trubisky, the Bills also brought in quarterback Mike White last season and signed him to a one-year deal in the offseason. Even though White was drafted by the Dallas Cowboys back in 2018, he’s only suited up for AFC East teams (Jets, Dolphins, Bills). White has similar traits as Allen as far as athleticism which makes him more of a stable backup than Trubisky.
According to Sal Capaccio, White had a great throw where he was throwing on his opposite side and threw a nice ball to receiver K.J. Hamler. Carpaccio also added that there has been chatter about the backup quarterback position and that preseason could be the time where we see who will be backing up the MVP.
Mike White just did a really nice job to roll out left, get his shoulders squared and fire a dart downfield to KJ Hamler.

We’ve talked a bit about the backup QB spot and some competition between White and Trubisky. Will be interesting to watch it play out in preseason.
While I believe that Trubisky will get the nod as the QB2, White has the chance to really prove that he deserves the roster spot over Trubisky. At the end of the day, the Bills have to think about what their gameplan would be should a backup have to come into the game. White has shown flashes here and there throughout his career, just like Trubisky.
However, Trubisky is more of a proven starter and he knows the offense better than White. At the same time, White is the better athlete so it may come down to preseason performance on who gets picked as the backup to Allen.
