We just have to get through Week 18 before we see the Buffalo Bills play a meaningful football game in the playoffs. After delivering a 40-14 beatdown to the New York Jets this past weekend, the Bills are the #2 seed in the AFC and they will now wait to see who they will be hosting in the first round of the playoffs.
Superstar quarterback and (hopefully) future NFL MVP award winner Josh Allen is expected to start, but only for a short time against the New England Patriots this Sunday. This should be the same case for the rest of Buffalo’s starters. With this setup, Bills fans will be watching Mitch Trubisky and the backups take the field to close out the regular season.
One player that hasn’t seen the field much this year up until in Week 17, should be featured a lot in Buffalo’s offense this week. Wideout Tyrell Shavers had his breakout moment against the Jets where he took a simple screen pass and ran 69 yards for a Bills touchdown to put them up 40-0 on the Jets.
Bills may have a hidden gem with Tyrell Shavers for playoffs and beyond
Let’s put it this way, Shavers has the same amount of touchdowns as Curtis Samuel, who signed a three-year deal with the Bills last offseason. He also has more explosive plays than Samuel. Call it what you want, but Shavers may be a better fit for the Bills than Samuel.
As of right now, the only two well-known Bills receivers that are not contractually guaranteed to be in Buffalo after this year is Amari Cooper and Mack Hollins. That could easily change with some extensions, but Brandon Beane and Sean McDermott may want to strongly consider finding a way to incorporate Shavers into the offense next season.
In addition, it may not be the worst idea to activate Shavers to the 53-man active roster for the playoffs. Whether it is for depth, or even finding a way to get him involved in the offense. Either way, Shavers is the kind of player that may have been highly overlooked and having him on your team could heavily benefit the Bills the rest of his year, as well as in 2025 and beyond.
